Introduction of Server 2008



Windows Server 2008 is a Network Operating System developed by Microsoft to provide and manage network based services.

Editions of 2k8
Windows Server 2008 Standard.
The Standard edition is for small to medium-sized businesses. It includes support for a single virtual server.

Windows Server 2008 Enterprise.
The Enterprise edition is for larger organizations and can support up to four virtual servers. It also includes support for clustering and hot-add memory capabilities.

Windows Server 2008 Datacenter.
The Datacenter edition is for high-end applications and large-scale virtualization. Support hot-add processor capabilities and unlimited number of virtual machines.

Windows Server 2008 Web.
This edition is designed to be a dedicated web server and hosts Internet Information Services (IIS) and other components such as ASP.NET and .NET Framework.

Windows Server 2008 Itanium-based
This is designed to work on systems using the high-end 64-bit Itanium processors. The Itanium edition supports high-end application server applications such as Microsoft’s SQL Server with very large databases or Microsoft Exchange Server with a large number of users and mailboxes.

1- Server Manager    A new console designed to manage Windows Server 2008.
2- Powershell             It combines the command-line shell with a scripting language.
3- NAP                        Security feature that helps you to protect the network from the clients.
4- WDS                       Previously known as RIS but now it has a lot of changes.
5- Server Core           All interaction with Server Core can be perform through the command line.
6- RODC                     Store a read-only copy of the Active Directory database.
